Wow so many different gifts to sort out!

A big 'Or Goon' (thank you in Khmer) from the children in Cambodia to the many generous and compassionate people in Singapore. There are lots more gifts not in this picture. Auntie Eva and Auntie Helen are making sure the stationery sets are properly packed first. The rest of the gifts like T shirts, watches, chewable vitamins and many more will be packed after this. No more room space to spare.

We are on the upper floor of the Mercy Team International (MTI) HQ in Phnom Penh. Teacher Jasmin is teaching the children at Safe Children Karaoke how to read the words of a song in English. These children are from the nearby slums, they do not know any English yet they are listening very attentively. We teach them many of our Sunshine House action songs and they love them all. One of their favourite is "Absolutely Nothing", especially the actions. The MTI staff love our songs too.

We brought many gifts for them and also sponsored the refreshments for the party that morning. Children here giving thanks to God for the presents and food. Besides our gifts, they were given a bun, a canned drink and a pear each. Unlike most of us here, they did not eat their food immediately. Some of them only drank the canned drink and took small bites of their buns. They wanted to bring the food home !! Amazingly caring children !

The children changed into the new T-shirts we brought for them. Some even held their other gifts for this phototaking. Aren't they adorable? Want to share your blessings and joy with them and the rest of the children in Cambodia? Go for it then !!

These young children live in the slums. Most of them do not attend school. Their parents are too poor to send them to school. All they do each day is to play with friends in the neighbourhood.

For young boys to go around totally naked or half dressed is very common in the slums areas.

Nothing to be shy about. No worries about being bitten by any insects, they seem to be immuned to the insect bites and harsh environment.

We joined the MTI team to one of the slums for first aid. Children and even adults came out of their homes to be treated or have their fingernails cut. Giving first aid to the slums once a week is a project by MTI to build bridges to reach the people in these communities. Most of the folks there are Buddhists.

Besides first aid, we did prayer walk around the area and also ministered to the children through bible stories, songs, games and balloon crafting. The children were excited to meet us. Thank God for this opportunity to bring joy to these little ones. We too have been blessed !

These are children at Kampong Speu Educational Centre. Kg Speu is about 2 hours drive from Phnom Penh.

These young ones were here for kidsxercises as early as 6.45 in the morning. We taught them to exercise with action songs. They enjoyed every minute of the stretching, waving, bending, jumping even twisting.

We too had great time working out with Teacher Katherine as the chief instructor !

More praises to God in the hall. Their enthusiasm simply overwhelmed us. What a blessed sight to see so many children and youth worshipping and praising God in a village in Cambodia! Almost all hands were raised except for 2 young curious little ones in the front row.

God loves them all.

These children are all very hungry for knowledge and very keen to learn. They gave us 100% attention even though we had to speak to them through an interpreter. On hind sight, we should have taken up Khmer a year ago. We can then share and chat with these lovely children freely.
For those planning a trip to Cambodia, we suggest you learn Khmer. You will have fun with these lovely young ones - kids speak the darnest things afterall!!!

Look how these youths bow their heads, close their eyes and pray to God, aren't you touched by what God is doing in the lives of these young ones? God is everywhere and He is there for anyone who calls on His name, even in Kg Speu !

God please pour forth your blessings unto these hungry souls, how they long after you !

A plate of plain instant noodles is luxury to these fortunate few whose parents are able to pay the fees to send them here for kindergarten classes. Though it is only a very small sum of about S$ 3 per month, many parents cannot afford to send their children to school.

Many children stood outside this hall waiting for the kindergarten children to finish their food before they were allowed in to join them for our activities. Sight of these children peeping in through the windows was really pathetic. We couldn't help it but to share our biscuits (meant for our breakfast) with them. More children (not in the picture) surrounded Teacher Lucy hoping to get a biscuit from her. How we wished then we had brought more with us.

The lady in black, Sonn is the centre's manager. Because of her love for her people in this village, she gave her land and partnered MTI in building this educational centre to conduct daily kindergarten classes for the young children. On weekends, they have Youth and Sunday services. The other lady, Lina is the centre's teacher. Though she has heard the Gospel many times before, she was not ready to have God in her life. However, when Teacher Jasmin testified of God's love for her and Ps Lindsey shared the Good News with her again that morning, Lina said 'Char' (Yes, in Khmer) without any hesitation. All praises to our Awesome God. When she repeated a simple prayer after Ps Lindsey, tears of joy rolled down our cheeks. Thank God for Lina's new life in Him. We then prayed for their families and other needs including their paddy fields which the people in the village depend on for their livelihood.

Don't be mistaken, we are not playing games, neither are we having a Kit Kat.

This is one of our usual group morning devotions. Despite our tight schedule for the day, we never fail to spend some time with our Lord each morning. We want to be first 'charged' by the Holy Spirit before we start our day.

Have you noticed that there are no fat and chubby children in any of our photos above? Yes, they are all thin, even their cows and chickens are thin too (see how thin this cow is, its ribs and bones can be counted!). Their mosquitoes, on the other hand are big by Singapore standard. Here we are at Elijah and Grace Sim's home. We spent some time with them in their home the night before we left Phnom Penh. We are touched by their lives, their love for God and the many lost souls in this 'out of comfort' country. May our Heavenly Father continue to bless this couple, the MTI team and multiply their efforts many many folds that more in Cambodia can be reached and delivered from their plight.

Report On Cambodia Mission Trip

Dear Church,

We want to thank God that we could partner with MTI (Mercy Team Int’l) through Sis Grace and her husband, Bro Elijah. God is good and we all are back safely.

Cambodia is a land ready to be possessed for the Lord. It is not a land flowing with milk and honey like Canaan but is a land filled with unsaved people. These people are poor physically, mentally and spiritually.

Physically stunted because they lack nourishment, their 14 or 15 year old youth look like our P5 or P6 children. Most of them are of a small builds including the parents. Some of the little children run around naked. Even their cows are so skinny that you can count their ribs.

Many of them are deprived in education because they are not fortunate like us to be able to study and gain knowledge. Some of them are orphans, street kids, drug addicts, prostitutes and single parents. You can find the poor living in wooden huts by the muddy river and there are many beggars on the streets. One Christian organization has rescued some young girls from prostitution and set up a café known as Jar of Clay to give them some skills and support their livelihood.

They lack the knowledge of the truth of God because they are Buddhists. While we were there, when the word of God was preached, the majority of the people were ready to receive Jesus into their hearts during altar call.

Lets all go in together to possess this land in the Name of Jesus. Are you ready to bring the gospel into Cambodia? If you are ready, our SunShine House teachers will partner with you and we will see the Kingdom of God expanded together. Thanks to our SunShine House teachers for their love and dedication during this mission trip. They have done a tremendous job and are ready to lead any group from Faith Assembly to go forth and share the gospel. To God be the Glory.

Christmas Party 2006

We love parties. Especially Christmas parties and lots of presents !

Everyone went wild searching high & low for Christmas symbols picture cards which were hidden all over the place.

And we had fun trying to guess the mystery number by tossing bean bags and tabulating the numbers. Surprisingly, three teams ended up with the same correct numbers.

All of us were amused by the presentation brought by two clowns, Bur-bur and Cha-cha. They showed us some tricks like joining stings which were cut, and how Bur-bur mananged to free himself after he was being tied up.

Later, Bur-bur & Cha-cha demostrated through a glass of water on how our lives become dirty and polluted when we do not have Jesus in our lives. And only when we accept Jesus in our hearts and by the blood of Jesus, the glass of dirty water, which represents our lives, can become clean again.

Many of the children raised their hands to respond to the call of salvation and there are also others who wants to re-dedicate their lives to Jesus. Amen !

The children all went home with many gifts in their arms and most of all, they went back with the greatest gift of all - Jesus.

We had a mini farewell party today for our friends who are going off.

Darren & Danzel who will be flying off to States.

We are going to miss both of them and we pray that the Lord will watch over them.

Combined Sunday

We have combined sunday activities once in a month.

After a fabulous time of praise & worship, everyone is eager to participate in the games. For the first game, we were divided into 2 groups and we had to 'string' our team together. Whoever finishes stringing wins.

And we have fun trying to keep the balloon up in the air while everyone cooperates to keep blowing the balloon. After a while, we are breathless, trying to huff & puff at the balloons and we all couldn't help laughing along.

Issac decides to lie down and rest after his energy has been spent chasing after balloons.

Everyone listens attentively as Teacher Jasmin shares with us the 2nd coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Nursery Class

We are the youngest in the Junior Sunday School. Most of us are between 3 to 4 years old, few of us are only 2 plus. Our other friends, Joel, Joseph, Anthony, Alexander, Gina and Sonya are not in the photo above, we'll post their photos next time.

Do you think we look nice with the crowns on our heads? We think we do look real nice!! All of us have finished our colouring except Nathan who wants to add on more colours to his artwork.

Every Sunday morning, our parents take us to Sunday School. Together with other older children, we worship God with songs and actions, then we go to our own classroom for bible stories, artwork and sometimes games. We always have fun.

This Sunday, Teacher Wei Ling told us about a king who loved God - KING SOLOMON. King Solomon loved God and talked to God often. He wanted his people to talk to God often too, so he built a big temple for his people to come together to talk to God and worship God. King Solomon took 7 years to build the temple. We want to be like King Solomon, we want to love God and talk to Him often. We know God can hear us no matter where we are.

Children's Day 2006 !

The children worshipped God with all their heart, might & soul during the praise & worship session this morning. They were listening attentively to Teacher Jasmin sharing the Word of God and the kids participated enthusiastically in answering the questions asked.

When it was games time, the children were so engrossed squashing the paper throwing the paper balls into the waste paper basket. It was an unorderly but fun time playing games with so many people.

There was a special award ceremony and here are the children who have received their awards. More of the award write-ups will be coming up soon once I have the information. Meanwhile, the photos first. Drums up .....

Darren - Always there whenever his teachers need help in class. He is always first to volunteeer to collect offerings, hold up any visual aids, distribute worksheets and goodies / snacks. Like little Samuel in the Bible who helped Priest Eli in God's temple, Darren is our helper at Sunday School.

Gina - She comes to class with a plastic carrier in her hands. She brings cornflakes, biscuits, candies and snacks for her friends in class. A very generous girl, very willing to share her food with others. Gina reminds us of a little boy in the Book of John Chapter 6 who gave his 5 barley loaves and 2 small fishes to Jesus' disciple to share with many other hungry people around him. We thank God for Gina's parents, who have bought the goodies for Gina to bring to Sunday School.

Sonia and Sophia - They have been a great help to faithsunshinehouse by automatically volunteering themselves as support singer helpers during every sunday worship time. They deserve the Best Support Singers award!! Keep it up cuties! May God bless both of you and increase your talents in the area of worship. Amen!

Nicholas Kok - He is always willing to pray when asked; even praying for his friends who are sick AND able to quote memory verse well.

Andy - He is always willing to obey whenever a task is assign to him. He is not selfish, a polite and well-mannered boy.

Gabriel - He is always ready to pray. He never says "NO" whenever we asked him. A patience and loveable boy.

Spencer Ng -He'll be excited when it's his turn to pray. And when others are absent or not knowing what to say in prayers, he'll volunteer himself to pray or teach him/her to pray. Wonderful prayer person, bold enough to be use by God in time to come. Keep up your prayer life Spencer!

Victor Junior Yap -He's talkative but helpful. Likes to help others to turn the bible to the correct page. Shows he knows the bible well! Good for you Victor for the Word of God is the foundation of growing spiritually!

Jonathan Chiam - Quiet but obedient. He is more attentive than others when comes to lesson time and handwork. Knows what to do without asking around. Tends to look at you attentively with big eyes and mouth ajar! Cute isn't he?...

Xinping - She always brings a smile to the Sunshine House. With a spirit of obedience, she faithfully and diligently learns about the word and actively participates in the worship. Continue to give your all to Jesus !

Daniel - A dependable boy, he engages himself in the activities during Bible lesson times. He makes effort to learn his memory verses and he brings joy to his friends & teachers alike. May God contine to let him grow and stand firm for Jesus !

Davina - She has proven herself faithful in attending classes every Sunday.
We know that while she's taking her PSLE this year, it has not deterred her from
coming to Sunday School even during her exams. As her teachers, we are very
encouraged by her act of putting God first in her life.

Benjamin - We have seen changes in Benjamin's life.
There was a period when he was missing from Sunday School and Teacher Betty
decide to call him to find out the reason. He started giving excuses
he could not wake on time and Teacher Betty told him to stop watching
late TV shows and make the right choice by coming to Sunday school.
He was reluctant initially but he finally made the right choice
by being an obedient child of God.

Children's Day Outing

The Faith Sunshine House organised a Children's Day Outing and extended our invitation to neighbourhood.

We all had such a wonderful & fulfilling day visiting the Hay Daries, Nyee Phoe-Holistic Nursey, Khai Seng Fish Farm & the NEWwater Visitor Centre.

The bus I/Cs are roll-calling out to the participants.

All excited and ready to board the bus.

At the Hay Diaries, we had a goat farm education tour and a milking demonstration. Many of us had fun feeding the goats with the alfafa leaves.

We went for a farm tour at the Nyee Phoe-Holistic Nursery and all the children had a chance to pot and bring back a plant.

The skies were turning grey and it was breezy when we were at the Khai Seng Fish Farm. There were segmented concrete ponds and in each pond they put the same species of fishes together. We are able to select and buy the fishes live.

Jesus Heals

The Healing at the Pool

1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"

7"Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."

Baking with Linus : Madeleines

Having tasted the home-made Madeleines, some teachers have asked me (Elaine) for the recipe.

At home as the chief patissier, I shall ask Linus, my petite patissier to show you how to make Madeleines.

If you are as petite as Linus, you will need to ask your Mommy or Daddy to help you along with this recipe.

First of all, a good patissier must be able to read the kitchen scales well.
The petite patissier measures 250g of flour and 1-1/2 tsp of baking powder exactly. It helps that the scale is digital and everything is measured precisely.

Next, the petite patissier measures the sugar to 230g. Scoop by scoop, he transfers the correct amount of sugar into the measuring cup.
The petite patissier must do this step slowly. He doesn't want any sugar on the table for the ants.

The petite patissier takes 5 eggs and carefully breaks all the shells. He knows that eggs are such a fragile but important ingredient in most bakes.

The petite patissier now slowly pours the sugar into the mixer of eggs. Standing on a stool helps the petite patissier to be able to observe that all his ingredients are in place.

He brings the mixing bowl to the Kitchenaid mixer and requests the chief patissier to power-on the electric appliance so that the machine can do its job to beat the eggs and sugar.
As a professional petite patissier, he knows he should never meddle with such a heavy-weight machine like this.

When the egg mixture is beaten till light and fluffy, the petite pattisier adds in the sieved flour and baking powder.
An experience patissier will know that this is the time to be serious and not to open his mouth and talk as the flour may get into the mouth.

Now, the petite pattisier flexes his fingers to give the lemon slice a good squeeze into the batter.

The chief patissier now steps in to help the petite patissier to pour in 250g of melted butter into the batter. Then the petite patissier folds the butter into the batter gently.

The batter is done.
It's time to spoon the batter into the madeleine mould.
The petite Pattisier does this with absolute care.
He doesn't want to waste a single drop of the yummy batter.

And it's baking time.
The petite Pattisier has finished spooning the batter.
He slips into the oversized oven mittens and delivers the batter into the oven.

After baking in the oven at 180C for 20 mins, the Madeleines are done.
How inviting the smell of the madeleines are !

West Timor Mission Trip

The testimony below is submitted by Teacher Katherine Koh on her mission trip to West Timor.

BIG PARTY IN LITTLE TIMOR

After reading and hearing so much about the Roslin Orphanage from many sources, especially from Capt Budi, an A345 captain with SIA, who co-manages the orphanage with his wife, Peggy, a team of 10 staff from the SIA Group decided to pay a visit there to experience the life in an orphanage in the small town of Kupang in West Timor. The team were there from 05 to 09 August 2006.

We stayed in a hostel 300 metres from the Roslin Orphanage. Although the hostel rooms had attached bathrooms, there were no hot water system and the bowl had to be manually flushed.

We were very excited to see the children, who were also just as excited to see us. Many are able to feed themselves from the time they were under 2 years old and most have been toilet trained. We helped to feed the smaller ones and some of us also helped to bathe them. There are now 40 children in the orphanage, the youngest being 35 days old and the oldest is now in 2nd year at the local university. The children are not put up for adoption as Budi and his wife, Peggy prefer to perform the role of foster parents to all their young charges. The children are given a proper education to at least a secondary level and the more promising charges are given a shot at tertiary schooling. The orphanage is entirely self funded by Budi and some sponsors. Apart from the Roslin Orphanage, Budi and Peggy also provide a mobile library service and employment opportunities to the locals in their stores and farms, run a college which provides technical education, and are involved in a whole host of other community activities such as the project to fortify the diets of pregnant and nursing mothers.

On the 3rd day, Peggy told us that 300 children were invited to the orphanage in the evening to feast on hard-boiled eggs and green bean soup. This was a rare treat for them as the village children only get to eat hard-boiled eggs twice a year. Although they reared hens, the eggs lay by the hens were sold in the market as an income. Peggy first embarked on the feeding program for the village children with the aim of improving the children’s nutrition, as malnutrition is common in Timor. We helped in the preparation of the food and as early as 4.30 pm, the children from nearby villages, some of them accompanied by their parents started streaming into the orphanage’s garage. The small party began with the children singing songs. We helped to distribute the bowls of green pea soup and the eggs to all the children and their parents.

On the 4th day, Peggy told us that she expected 400 children to come to the orphanage in the evening. This event was not planned for our sakes but is part of the planned arrangements to improve the nutrition diet of the children of the small village. We again helped to prepare the food for the evening feast and packed them into plastic boxes.

The party started with the village children and their parents singing and dancing to the Timorese traditional songs which were being played. When the dinner was served, it was amazing to see the small children ate their food so quickly. Peggy then asked if they wanted more rice and many put up their hands. It was more amazing to see them enjoyed eating just plain rice alone. Corn is the only staple food of the locals and to them eating rice was a real treat. The singing and dancing resumed after dinner. The children enjoyed themselves so much but like they say, all good things must come to an end.

This is one of the most enriching trips we have had. Being able to see with our very own eyes and mingling with the little ones as well as the local people, have made us look at lives in a different perspective. The events are still vivid in our memories.

We would encourage more people to visit the orphanage on a regular basis and help out in any way we could. This is a way of encouraging Budi and Peggy that we are by their side, and supporting their work. Now, one of the urgent needs are the collection of books including children English books, and multi media materials for the new library which is target to open in January 2007.
